Phone compatibility

dumbsms is tested on the TCL Flip Go and Sonim XP3plus. If you're eyeing a different Android flip, I can try it — but read the fine print first. This is a hobby project, not a lab.

Of the two verified phones, the Sonim is much faster — about 10× the TCL over Bluetooth (~15 K/s vs ~1.2 K/s). Either works for texting; the TCL just means slower syncs and photo downloads.

How it works

  1. Fill out the request form with the exact model and carrier you're considering.
  2. I'll reply and tell you whether it's worth trying — or save your money (KaiOS and locked-down firmware won't work).
  3. If we agree, you order a new phone and have it shipped directly to me.
  4. I set it up, poke at it with dumbsms, and report back with honest results and setup notes.
No guarantees. I can't promise compatibility, a timeline, or that every feature will work. Nights-and-weekends timing. You own the purchase decision — I'm just the first person to unwrap it.

The deal

  • You order, I don't. Buy a new unit from whatever retailer you like and ship it to me. I'm not purchasing phones on spec.
  • I keep the phone. Consider it a thank-you for funding a dev unit. You get a straight answer and setup instructions — not the hardware back.
  • Don't order until I say so. Submit the form first. Some retailers won't ship to PO boxes, and some models aren't worth the gamble.
  • Android AOSP flips only. Real Android with USB debugging — not KaiOS, not a smartphone in a flip costume with no debug access.
